Safe and Sound Protection of Children, Young People and Vulnerable Adults

Local voluntary arts groups open up opportunities for people of all ages and experiences to participate in creative activities. It is important for all groups to act responsibly and take care of their members and supporters.

Having a good Protection Policy in place creates a safe environment for all members of the group, where children, young people and vulnerable adults feel they are listened to. It also means that other members of the group know what to do should a situation arise where abuse is suspected or disclosed.

However, it is no use 'borrowing' a Protection Policy which is not useful and relevant for your own groups' needs. The policy needs to be thought through and developed by your group so that it is understood and adopted by all members. Sometimes it is difficult to know where to start but there are some key areas that you will need to consider.

DIVA has copies of some useful publications for groups requiring further advice, information and training about protection issues:
· Wakefield Area Child Protection Committee have published the following booklet - Working Together to Safeguard Children Child Protection Procedures for Voluntary Organisations

Keeping Arts Safe: Protection of children, young people and vulnerable adults involved in arts activities is published by Arts Council England. Available in Braille, large print, on audiotape and in electronic version from: Tel: 020 7973 6517 email:enquiries@artscouncil.org.uk

Criminal Record Checks - What's involved?

How can you feel confident that everyone involved with your group is responsible and trustworthy around children?

A disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau can help.
CRB disclosures are required for anyone who works with children in publicly funded education or for projects funded by Arts Council England. In fact more and more organisations and institutions are insisting on CRB disclosures for people working with children.

Local Community Groups may have to provide their own disclosures but individuals can’t apply to the Criminal Records Bureau for themselves, so what can a group do?

One answer is to go through an umbrella body to get your disclosure (also known as a CRB check).
Here’s one that may be able to help:
Artscape: the national directory for arts in education Artscape have the facilities to process Disclosure checks through the Criminal Records Bureau and can guide individuals through this procedure.

First you must register with Artscape.
All arts organisations and individual artists are invited to register free of charge and provide full details of the work they undertake and/or resources they offer.
Note: all individuals named in the Artscape directory must provide evidence of an Enhanced Disclosure.
You can register online at www.artscape.org.uk Or request a registration form from: artscape, PO Box 1
, Sheriff Hutton, York YO60 7YU. Tel. 01653 618429. Email:clare.mallorie@arscape.org. uk
